Welcome to Nature Photography by Tom! My wife, Peggy, and I live just outside Washington, D.C. but I love to travel in search of new adventures and wildlife to be photographed.
I bought my first serious camera, a Nikon Photomic FTn, in 1974 and have loved photography ever since. After two careers - first, in the military and then working for a defense contractor - I retired in 2013 to have more time to travel and pursue wildlife photography.
I have always loved animals of any and all descriptions - both wild and domestic. However, my addiction to nature photography in general, and wildlife photography specifically, started several years ago with a two hour drive from my home to see and photograph a bald eagle. When I saw an eagle in flight and the shutter clicked for the first time, I was instantly hooked. Since then, I have traveled in North America, Europe, Africa, and the high Arctic in search of wildlife to photograph. The experiences have been astounding and the opportunity to photograph wildlife has been a source of immense pleasure.
There is simply no substitute for seeing wild animals in their world where one must approach them on their terms. And it heightens one's awareness of the very negative impact we humans are having on these beautiful creatures and the future of their species. The future of the big cats, rhinos, elephants, the great apes, polar bears, African wild dogs and many other species are in our hands. It is up to us to help them avoid extinction at the hands of poachers and destruction of their habitat by humans.
I consider it a great blessing to be able to photograph these magnificent animals. I hope you enjoy the photos on this website as much as I enjoyed taking them.
